November Class Feature
Ethical Issues Regarding Trauma for Massage Therapist
Sunday, November 13
10am–12pm
Most massage therapists have had a
client who had an emotional release while on the table. For some this may show
up as crying, some clients freeze, and others have uncontrollable laughter.
This session will explore and provide some context about the impact of trauma.
Trauma may include physical experiences such as car accidents; however in many
cases, it is the emotional trauma that gets caught in the body and can be
triggered by massage. The statistics vary depending on the source but it is
commonly known that upwards of 15% of women and 3% of men have experienced
sexual assault that has a lasting trauma impact. This percentage of trauma
survivors increases substantially for people of color, people with
disabilities, and GLBTQ folks. During this class you will increase your
understanding of the impact of trauma on the brain and body. You will expand
your understanding of the emotional responses that you may experience from
clients. Finally, you will explore ways to respond when someone discloses prior
trauma or has an emotional response while in your care.
Combine this two-hour CE class with
one of the other two ethics classes being offered to meet the Washington State
Massage Therapist CE requirement for professional ethics.
