Detox with Seaweeds

Seaweeds have been used for centuries to maintain and improve health. We are very pleased to now offer a concentrated seaweed product called Modifilan to support your body’s integrity and optimal functioning.

Harvested from the clean waters of the Northern Pacific Ocean, the brown seaweed Laminaria japonica possesses numerous health-promoting virtues. Modifilan was developed in the former USSR to help the victims of the Chernobyl nuclear catastrophe. Much study was also done on seaweed therapy in Japan following the explosion of nuclear bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

In addition to a wide array of trace minerals, Laminaria contains organic iodine, alginates and fucoidan. Iodine protects and normalizes thyroid function. Alginates have been shown to bind with toxic, radioactive heavy metals and escort them through the digestive system where they are excreted. Fucoidan has been shown to promote apoptosis, the normal cellular self-destruction mechanism that helps eliminate aberrant cells such as cancer cells.

Modifilan is not simply dried, ground seaweed—It provides highly concentrated and digestible dried juice of this kelp. Forty pounds of raw Laminaria is needed to produce a single pound of Modifilan. A patented cold-temperature extraction process preserves the molecular integrity of this medicinal food from the sea.

There are many ways Modifilan can be used—either preventatively or in response to health challenges or toxic exposures. Brown seaweed has been shown to be of benefit for: thyroid health; heavy metal detoxification, including strontium and cadmium from smokers; maintaining proper body weight; immune support; health of hair, skin and nails. Please explore some of the outstanding benefits this gift of nature may offer you.

90 Years in harmony with Nature and the Human Being.

90 years of sustainability--a theme that runs throughout Weleda’s rich history. But for Weleda, sustainability is not just environmental—it’s also social and economic.

Weleda says:  "We passionately believe in the effectiveness of products that echo nature’s instinctive means of healing: the secret lies in potent antioxidants, soothing plant extracts, and pure, nourishing oils. It’s important to us, too, that we gather these ingredients in the gentlest way possible, in a way that pays homage to the delicate but vital relationship between humanity and our surrounding world.

"How do we do this? We draw our organic ingredients from Biodynamic® gardens or certified wild sources; we support local projects and form fair trade partnerships all around the world; we minimize our carbon footprint wherever possible, be it in construction or transport."

OHA says, "Nature knows what’s best for your skin because nature knows balance. Unlike most “natural” skin care brands, OHA uses whole ingredients with the balancing, healing, and regenerative elements of nature left intact. We call this interaction between these organic ingredients and your skin, 'BioActivity.' "

OHA's Intensive Nutrient Complex is an exquisite facial oil that delivers vital antioxidants and other nutrients to the skin, such as sea buckthorn, MSM, cranberry seed, and more. Formulated with the intention to heal sun-damaged, aging, and over-exposed skin, the Intensive Nutrient Complex can be worn under the Daily Moisturizer or on it's own, as a moisturizer in it's own right.

For a limited time, customers can try this amazingly potent formula with purchase of a full size Daily Moisturizer.* OHA's Daily Moisturizer is a protective force, with cherry kernel and jojoba oil, and African shea butter. September 23rd is Hug a Vegetarian Day

Five Reasons to Hug a Vegetarian:

1.  They help conserve water.  It takes 2,500 gallons of water to produce 1 pound of meat.  The average water consumption of a large-scale chicken farm is approximately 100 million gallons per day.

2.  Vegetarians could potentially solve our world hunger crisis.  90% of corn, 75% of soy, 65% of barley, and 90% of oats grown in the United States are used as animal feed.  More people could be fed with these grains than with the meat produced by them.

3.  They help reduce pollution.  In the United States, the meat industry is responsible for one third (35%) of the methane emissions and a whopping two-thirds (65%) of the nitrous oxide emissions, both considered greenhouses gases.

4.  A vegetarian diet could free up land for the production of food.  170 pounds of beef can be produced on an acre of land; the same area would be able to produce 20,000 pounds of potatoes.

5.  Vegetarians are just plain sexy.

2012 Calendars Are Available at Radiance

These are just a few examples of the calendars we feature.

We'Moon: Gaia Rhythms for Womyn ~
The 31st edition of this iconic "datebook spins around the theme of Chrysalis, our interpretation of Tarot Card #12, The Hanged One. Powerful and beautiful, We'Moon 2012 weaves insightful astrological articles, grounding Holy Day writings, stunning art and writing from over 150 gifted contributors into a handbook for the year ahead."  ~ from wemoon.com

Charley Harper Calendar ~
"Using simple geometric shapes and vivid colors, Charley Harper captured the essence of each creature he painted. Harper developed his “minimal realist” style while a student at the Art Academy of Cincinnati and the Art Students League in New York City. Here are twelve of Harper’s paintings—among them Loonrise, Puffins Passing, Quailsafe, and Skimmerscape—to brighten each month of your year." ~ from Pomegranate

Yoga Journal ~
"Yoga is defined as the union of breath, body, mind, and spirit or the union of individual consciousness with universal consciousness. The word yoga refers both to that state of union and to the practices that lead to that state of union. Although yoga is far more than a physical practice, the forms of the asanas (the physical yoga poses) embody the grace and intelligence of the entire yoga system and, as such, are truly inspiring to practice or to gaze upon. The twelve images in this calendar just might inspire one to practice and enjoy true yoga." ~ from Pomegranate

Iced Tea Recipe:

Refreshing Rooibos Tea!

Rooibos makes a delicious and healthful alternative for those hankering for traditional “iced tea” made from black tea.  Though similar in color and flavor, rooibos is caffeine free. Lighter in tannins, rooibos has a slightly sweet, slightly nutty flavor. Also known as red bush in its native South Africa, rooibos offers very similar nutritional and antioxidant benefits as green tea.

Proportions: Use about 1/2 cup rooibos leaves to every two quarts of water. Pour boiled water over the leaves in a large jar or, alternately, use unboiled water and set the jar in a sunny warm spot to make sun tea. Steep for 20 minutes [if using boiled water] or several hours [if sun tea]. You’re looking for a rich bronzy colored tea; taste a little before straining out the herb. While the tea is still warm, you can add a bit of honey, stevia, agave syrup or other natural sweetener if desired. Cool in fridge or serve over ice. Yum!

Rooibos is also great combined with a little peppermint to brighten the flavor and add cooling benefits.

Got Lower Back Pain?

Massage may help!

"Americans spend at least $50 billion each year to treat lower back pain, the second most common neurological problem in the U.S. after headaches, according to the National Institutes of Health."

"A new study in the Annals of Internal Medicine finds that massage may be an effective therapy for treating lower back pain, when compared with conventional medical treatment."  ~ from cnn.com

The study  included 401 people from age 20 to 65 who had chronic low back pain of unknown cause.  They each received an hour of either Swedish (relaxation) massage or therapeutic massage once a week.  After 10 weeks, study participants experienced less pain and better mobility with either type of massage than patients receiving usual medical care.

So if you're experiencing low back pain, consider giving massage a try.  Radiance has a number of exceptional therapists and we're open 7 days a week for massage.  Give us a call at 357-9470 to schedule an appointment.

Closing For Inventory

Yep, we're counting the candles and weighing the herbs
And removing the dust that we have disturbed.

Polishing statues, jewelry and the glass shelves
With the help of numerous Radiance elves.

Researching odd SKU's and straightening Zafus
While others enjoy their lunch on Fifth Avenue.

When all has been counted and numbers are true,
When crystals all sparkle and tea has been brewed,

We'll throw the doors open, so please don't despair.
We'll be back in business in time for Lakefair!

Radiance will be closed on Wednesday, July 13th and Thursday, July 14th, so that we can conduct inventory.

We apologize for any inconvenience that may result from our closure.

We will reopen Friday, July 15th at 10 am.

Celebrate Freedom. . . .

Freedom from chemical sunscreens!

Chemical sunscreens generally protect you from UVA or UVB ray, but not both.  In order to get broad spectrum protection, you would need to select a sunscreen with multiple chemicals that get absorbed into the skin and can potentially cause skin irritations, allergies and other health concerns.  Chemical sunscreens also degrade over time, so last year's tube won't give you the same level of protection.

Badger sunscreens protect you from both UVA and UVB rays with uncoated, non-nano Zinc Oxide. They  contain Organic Olive Oil, Jojoba Oil, Cocoa Butter and Shea Butter.  They don't contain any water so they are ultra moisturizing while they protect your skin.  As soon as you put it on, Badger sunscreen starts working---no waiting--and it stays on the skin when you sweat or play in the water.  It won't run and drip into your eyes when you sweat, yet it still allows your skin to breathe.

Badger's Sunscreens have the highest ratings for safety and effectiveness by the Environmental Working Group's Cosmetic Safety Database! You'll find them at the top of the list out of almost 2,000 sunscreens!

Come check out our selection of Badger sunscreens. It includes an SPF30 Baby Sunscreen, an SPF30 Sunscreen plus deet-free bug repellant and a lightly-scented SPF15 or 30.  Active lifestyle?  Check out the SPF30 All Season Face Stick.  While you're here, take a minute to read Badger's brochure.  It has some great information regarding SPF ratings, physical barrier vs. chemical sunscreens, nanoparticles and more.

Tired of whisker burns?

Give Dad a smooth shave with a professional shave brush and a shaving soap suited to his skin's needs and he'll be irresistibly kissable.  Not only is this a traditional shave method, it is also a natural way to shave--no harsh chemicals!  Bringing a shave brush across the skin produces a mild exfoliation; and those who use a shave brush are less likely to get ingrown hairs.

According to Wikipedia:  "The greatest benefit from shave brush use is the tendency to soften and lift facial hair before a shave. Applying shaving cream by hand mats hair or raises it unevenly. Shave brush use, however, requires agitation of the soap or cream in a mug to form a lather suitable for a shave, before application of the lather to the face in a gentle circular motion. Therefore, a razor does not need to be pressed to the skin in order to provide a close shave."

At Radiance, you can find a Kala style natural bristle shaving brush and three varieties of shaving soap: Bay Rhum Shaving Soap (a classic) and a moisturizing Goat's Milk Shaving Soap from Camamu, plus Morning Compass Shaving Soap by Ballard Organics, which is formulated for sensitive skin.

Tell Dad to turn the other cheek--cuz here come all the extra kisses
