Diversity, Social Justice, and Ethics for Massage Practitioners

November Class Feature

Diversity, Social Justice, and Ethics for Massage Practitioners

Sunday, November 13
1–3pm

It is human nature to evaluate others based on issues of difference. We all have biases. This class will provide some solid grounding in social justice theory and the language of diversity. As a massage practitioner, you will explore your own identity and increase your awareness about how issues of power of privilege may impact your work with clients. This class will be part lecture but is designed to be experiential and participants will be expected to participate fully in the activities and dialog. You will walk away with theory, language, and self-awareness so that you can serve a diverse population of clients.

Combine this two-hour CE class with one of the other two ethics classes being offered to meet the Washington State Massage Therapist CE requirement for professional ethics.

Instructor: Andrea Seabert. Andrea has worked on issues of diversity, social justice, and power and privilege for over 30 years. She completed a Master of Social Work at the University of Washington and has worked at The Evergreen State College for the last 15 years engaging students in restorative justice and conflict resolution. Andrea co-owns Radiance Herbs and Massage with her partner Karin. Andrea’s heart’s work is as the camp director for an all-volunteer organization that provides a healing camp for children who are survivors of sexual abuse. Check out www.campvictory.us.

Ethical Issues Regarding Trauma for Massage Therapists

November Class Feature

Ethical Issues Regarding Trauma for Massage Therapist

Sunday, November 13
10am–12pm

Most massage therapists have had a client who had an emotional release while on the table. For some this may show up as crying, some clients freeze, and others have uncontrollable laughter. This session will explore and provide some context about the impact of trauma. Trauma may include physical experiences such as car accidents; however in many cases, it is the emotional trauma that gets caught in the body and can be triggered by massage. The statistics vary depending on the source but it is commonly known that upwards of 15% of women and 3% of men have experienced sexual assault that has a lasting trauma impact. This percentage of trauma survivors increases substantially for people of color, people with disabilities, and GLBTQ folks. During this class you will increase your understanding of the impact of trauma on the brain and body. You will expand your understanding of the emotional responses that you may experience from clients. Finally, you will explore ways to respond when someone discloses prior trauma or has an emotional response while in your care.
