Chemical sunscreens generally protect you from UVA or UVB ray, but not both. In order to get broad spectrum protection, you would need to select a sunscreen with multiple chemicals that get absorbed into the skin and can potentially cause skin irritations, allergies and other health concerns. Chemical sunscreens also degrade over time, so last year's tube won't give you the same level of protection.
