Radiance is proud to offer Alaffia's Beautiful Curls line, a hair care line designed to focus on three seperate curly hair conditions: Wavy to Curly, Curly to Kinky, and Babies & Up (suitable for all curly hair types).

Alaffia defines the three type of curls in the following way, taken from their website:

In wavy hair, the wave or curl forms a gentle "S" pattern throughout the hair. Wavy hair yields to gravity, hanging down and staying relatively close to the head.

Kinky hair is very tightly curled, with a clearly visible spiral pattern that can have rounded curves ("S" pattern), or more angled curves ("Z") pattern. Kinky hair can easily tangle, since the coils interlock together. Because of this, breakage will occur if care is not taken when detangling.

Curly hair is all curls in between wavy and kinky. This covers a large range of curl diameter, but in all cases, the curls are well defined, springy with a well-defined "S" pattern, and ranges from big, loose curls to bouncy, tight corkscrew curls.

Damiana Cordial for Valentine’s Day

Damiana [Turnera diffusa] is a shrub native to the southwestern U.S. and Central America. It has an affinity for the nervous system and, among other attributes, it has a wide reputation as a relaxing aphrodisiac in its native range. In Mexico, for example, damiana liqueur is sold in distinctive bottles.

Damiana cordial can easily be made at home. The key is to let the preparation age long enough to let the flavors fully blend and develop. A little goes a long way; damiana cordial is meant to be sipped and savored.

This is perfect to share with a loved one…or to give as gifts. Begin your project now so that it will be matured by mid-February.

Here are some basic proportions. You can increase the recipe if desired.

1 oz dried organic damiana leaves

1 organic vanilla bean, split and chopped

2 cups brandy

1 ½ cups water

1 cup raw local honey

¼ cup rose water or hydrosol [optional]

Soak the dried damiana leaves and chopped vanilla bean in brandy for five days. Strain and reserve the alcohol in an airtight jar.

Place the strained, brandy-saturated damiana and vanilla in a separate jar and add the water. Mix well and let sit for three days.

Strain. Reserve the water in a fresh container. Compost the spent herb.

Warm the water extract gently in a pot over low heat. Dissolve the honey into this.

Add the sweetened water extract to the previously made alcohol extract and stir well.

Pour into sterilized bottle[s], label, and let age for one month or longer.

Can use as is or serve with a splash of rose water or hydrosol. Enjoy!

Detox with Seaweeds

Seaweeds have been used for centuries to maintain and improve health. We are very pleased to now offer a concentrated seaweed product called Modifilan to support your body’s integrity and optimal functioning.

Moving Planet Day is happening on Sept. 24th in many cities across the country. It will be a day to put our demands for climate action into motion—marching, biking, skating—calling for the world to go beyond fossil fuels.

In Olympia, this event is taking place downtown from 12 pm to 8 pm, with a picnic in Sylvester park from 5-7 pm. Walk, ride your bike or take the bus and discover how easy it is to shop and explore downtown on foot---and let your voice be heard in support of change. Some streets will be closed off to increase accessibility to some venues and encourage walking tours.

Refreshing Rooibos Tea!

Rooibos makes a delicious and healthful alternative for those hankering for traditional “iced tea” made from black tea. Though similar in color and flavor, rooibos is caffeine free. Lighter in tannins, rooibos has a slightly sweet, slightly nutty flavor. Also known as red bush in its native South Africa, rooibos offers very similar nutritional and antioxidant benefits as green tea.

Proportions: Use about 1/2 cup rooibos leaves to every two quarts of water. Pour boiled water over the leaves in a large jar or, alternately, use unboiled water and set the jar in a sunny warm spot to make sun tea. Steep for 20 minutes [if using boiled water] or several hours [if sun tea]. You’re looking for a rich bronzy colored tea; taste a little before straining out the herb. While the tea is still warm, you can add a bit of honey, stevia, agave syrup or other natural sweetener if desired. Cool in fridge or serve over ice. Yum!

Rooibos is also great combined with a little peppermint to brighten the flavor and add cooling benefits.

The study included 401 people from age 20 to 65 who had chronic low back pain of unknown cause. They each received an hour of either Swedish (relaxation) massage or therapeutic massage once a week. After 10 weeks, study participants experienced less pain and better mobility with either type of massage than patients receiving usual medical care.

Freedom from chemical sunscreens!

Chemical sunscreens generally protect you from UVA or UVB ray, but not both. In order to get broad spectrum protection, you would need to select a sunscreen with multiple chemicals that get absorbed into the skin and can potentially cause skin irritations, allergies and other health concerns. Chemical sunscreens also degrade over time, so last year's tube won't give you the same level of protection.

Featured Artists: Heather Taylor and Lynn Grotsky; also Lincoln Elementary

Heather Taylor has been a commissioned artist for 15 years, creating art for public and private viewing. She has specialized in mural work for medical offices as well as schools, public libraries, state organizations, museums, and city spaces.

Heather works in acrylic for her murals, using watercolor, pen, gold and silver leaf, graphite, pastel, mosaic and collage as required in her public and private work.

Lynn Grotsky at It's Beadiful! started making torched beads about seven years ago. Always having been drawn to watercolors and glass art she realized she had a visceral response to the fluidity of colors and textures. After taking a glass blowing glass where she failed miserably due to an eye problem that prevents her from having depth perception, she realized she could compensate by blowing glass on a smaller level. Thus, she started doing lampwork, using a small torch that she can sit close to and using short mandrels, helping her to keep the melting glass level. Watching the glass melt together into varying degrees of molten designs became a meditative way to relax and and quiet her mind. Three years ago she also discovered fused glass and is just beginning her foray into stained glasswork.

Working on the smaller level allowed Lynn to let go of most of the depth perception problems, and use her love of texture and color to create whimsical jewelry filled with irregular shapes and interesting imperfections mixed in with a bold array of striking color combinations.

The Olympian March 17, 2011

Olympia and Lacey have teamed up to recruit at least 1,011 residents to enroll in Puget Sound Energy’s green-energy program by year's end.

If the campaign is successful, the utility will give each city a solar project grant totalling $40,000 in Olympia and $20,000 in Lacey.

The idea behind the voluntary “Flip the Switch” campaign is to support renewable-energy projects such as wind and solar in the region, which, in turn, create green-energy jobs and lessen the region’s dependence on fossil fuels.

More than 60 percent of Puget Sound Energy’s wholesale power comes from coal and natural-gas plants, both sources of greenhouse-gas emissions, according to the utility’s 2009 energy portfolio.

About 4,000 residents and businesses in Olympia and Lacey and 30,000 throughout the utility’s service territory are signed up for the green-power program.

If a household signs up for 100 percent green power, it will pay about $10-$12 more per month for electricity. The reduction in greenhouse-gas emissions will be equal to taking a car off the road for a year or avoiding an estimated........... read more

Prevention Measures for Radiation Exposure

In response to the recent damage to the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan, I have written this hand-out to review methods to decrease health problems from radiation exposure. Thus far there has not been a large release of radiation because the radioactive fuel rods have not melted down enough to melt the containment housing of the reactor. There have been low levels of radioactive gas released, but these are not apt to have international effects. However, in case a meltdown disaster does occur, you will have information to help minimize the effects on your health. How long to take these supplements is discussed later, but do not take them for more than a month without reviewing with your physician if they are safe for you. Also, if you take any prescription medications, interactions with these supplements must be checked.

Iodine: Radioactive iodine is released from power plant meltdowns. It then lands in your thyroid gland because your thyroid uses iodine to function. The radiation increases your chances of developing thyroid cancer and growths years later. (Other glands also use iodine such as your adrenals, but to a much lesser degree.) To prevent this, take oral, over the counter iodine. This will fill most of the iodine receptor (landing sites) in your thyroid gland which will prevent the radioactive version of iodine from attaching to your thyroid gland. If there is nowhere to land, the radioactive iodine will move on and do minimal or no damage.

Dose: there is no precise way to know what dose will saturate the iodine receptor sites in your body. Please note that the RDA dose of 150mcg is not intended to saturate your thyroid so we will aim for 1,000mcg/day. You can buy this at most health food stores. Do not take iodine if you are allergic to itor have hyperthyroid. (not the more common hypothyroid, which is ok)

Anti-oxidants: Most of the damage from radiation is from oxidative damage which can lead to cancers, tumors, and dysfunction of the affected organ. Therefore, the best preventive measure is to increase anti-oxidants or “free radical scavengers”. Fortunately, there are many strong anti-oxidants available to you via both food and supplements. Those mentioned here are just a few examples of good anti-oxidants. Many of you will know of other examples. You do not need to take all of the following supplements. Pick half of them until the radiation exposure has cleared.

1. Beta carotene- 25,000 IU/day.

2. Vitamin C- 1,000mg 2 x day.(If diarrhea, decrease dose to 500 2xday)

3. Vitamin E-1,000 IU /day.

4. B-complex- such as is in a multiple. Aim for about 10mg 2 x day with food. (Brewer’s yeast ½ oz 2xday) B-vitamins are not anti-oxidants, but they help the other nutrients do their jobs.

5. Selenium- 400mcg per day.

6. Glutathione-1,000mg 2 x day preferably away from meals ie ½ hr before or 1 ½ hr after meals. (It’s ok, but less effective with meals.)

7. Cysteine- 500mg 2 x day.

8. Ginseng (either the Siberian or American type)-one capsule (1/4tsp)
2 x day. Higher doses may be too stimulating for some people.

9. Berries of dark color are also good anti-oxidants.

Doses for children: The doses given above are for adults. None of the items are contraindicated for children, especially when taken for a limited time. Decrease the dose according to their weight. Calculate what % of 120 lbs your child’s weight is and use that % of the above doses. For example, if your child weighs close to 60 lb, this is 50% of 120 so use 50% of the doses.

When to start and stop this treatment: Start as soon as we hear that the reactor has released a lot of radiation. If this happens, the radiation will not reach us for a day or two (watch the news) so you will have time to start. Continue taking the supplements until we hear that the radiation exposure has diminished to a safe level. I do not know who to trust for this information so use your own judgment.

Contraindications: Do not take any of the above supplements if you are allergic to them or anything related to them. Read the labels for any of your allergens, if you have any. In particular, iodine can be allergenic so do not take it if you have reacted to iodine dyes or other sources of iodine. You would usually already know if you have an iodine allergy. As already mentioned, if you have an overactive thyroid, do not take iodine.

We are all concerned about the environmental effects that Japan's earth quake will have on the planet let alone the Northwest. If you are looking for some information about iodine dosage please check out this FDA document and remember it is not safe to take high doses of iodine if there is no threat of exposure. It is however very good for your body to support your thyroid function. We have some really wonderful thyroid support including seaweeds.
